Polish Word of the Day | Weekend

Pronounced: weekend.

When I was kid, even though the word weekend existed, the 2 days off work did not. All Saturdays but two (per year) were “working Saturdays”. Why would you call the one day off you had a “weekend”? In 70s through late 80s, thanks to the movement that abolished the communist party, more Saturdays off were added to the calendar. By 1989, with the end of the communist Poland, all Saturdays were a day off. That when you could truly start celebrating this much loved word.
